In 1885 a German biblical scholar named Julius Wellhausen wrote a series of articles describing the four sources or “people” who recorded the oral traditions that would become known collectively as the Torah. He named them Yahwist (J), Elohist (E), Priestly (P), and Deuteronomist (D). Each source is unique in its style, theme, vocabulary, and even chronology, but all were put together by later redactors to give us the Bible we have today.

• The Yahwist, so named because he uses the Divine Name Yahweh throughout his writings, was probably the first of the four sources. He writes in a narrative style that is the basic framework for the Torah upon which the other sources build.
